Sunday 20th July marked the end of an era for Stepney FC with current Manager Zaheer Saleh stepping down after a very successful two years in charge of the senior team. The team celebrated with a meal at Elachies on Woodford High Road. Zaheer led the team to second position in the Inner London Football League (ILFL) and runners-up in the cup competition in his first season. He followed that up with a comprehensive win of the BFA Summer League Premier Division with the team only conceding four goals and losing just one game. He went one better the next season winning the ILFL League and Cup competition, becoming the first manager in Stepney's history to do the double. He was thanked by the Vice-Chair Forid Ahmed and Honorary President Abdal Ullah for his hard work and commitment to the club over the past years. In particular they complimented him on the way he handled the team in India during the team's recent tour. Zaheer thanked all the players and management for their support and the encouragement he had received during his time as Manager. Zaheer also said he is looking forward to resuming his playing career with Stepney once more. The event also marked the appointment of Zak Hussain as the manager of the Senior Team. Zak welcomed the opportunity and said he was really looking forward to working with an exciting group of players and hopefully continuing with the legacy of the previous managers. Zak comes with great deal of experience of both playing and managing at high level. He had been managing London APSA over the last few years in the Essex Senior League.
The team is looking forward to another year of hard work starting this week with the SSV Charity Cup in Victoria Park
Congratulation Mufi (SFC Captain) from SFC management and players.
Monday 19 th May 2008 is a date that will always be imbedded in my memory for as long as I live. For me, it was a moment that I had dreamt of many times as a young boy growing up in East London. Since the age of eleven, there have been many times when I have walked through the turnstiles at Upton Park, watched the hammers play and wondered how it would feel to walk on to that pitch which has been graced by the likes of Geoff Hurst, Trevor Brooking, Bobby Moore, Paulo De Canio and the list goes on....
So you can imagine my delight when I was asked to play in an exhibition game on the ground which has seen so many legends over the years. I was also invited to be one of the coaching staff for the Select Asian team, which featured five of Stepney's players, Forhan, Foysal, Raju, Jahed (Zola) and Zah, who is also a lifelong hammers fan. The event was organised by Canary wharf Plc in partnership with Met Police to promote Asian players into mainstream football and also to increase recruitment for the Police force
I entered the stadium as I have done many times previously, only this time I was allowed to walk through the tunnel and into the changing rooms. As I walked into the changing room there some familiar faces from the local football scene along with the likes of Tony Woodcock, the former Arsenal and England International.
Tony Woodcock was named our Captain and was an honour playing in the same team as him. Our Chairman Khalis Bhai was also in my team and he had a great game. I must admit I was little disappointed that there were no former West Ham players on show. However, that disappointment soon elapsed when I had met Sir Trevor Brooking and managed to have a brief conversation with him.
We won our game comfortably 3-0 against a mixed Police and Community team. The whole experience of playing in Upton Park was superb and a once in a life time opportunity for me. As soon as the final whistle blew for our game, the attention turned to the next game where five of our players were representing the best of Asian talents in London. Our boys performed brilliantly and so did the rest of the squad outclassing the Met Police team which plays in the Ryman's League. The Asian select team won 4-0 with Zola scoring a fantastic goal to cap off a memorable day for all of us involved.
There are rumours that this may become an annual event. Let's hope so as this is a good enough reason not to throw away the old boots yet!
